Sin City 1949

Harry Jones (Blanc La Rocque) and his wife (Dorothy Malone) are celebrating their 10 year wedding anniversary at a nightclub when he first spots cabaret singer Bobbie Holiday (Elva La Treque). Unable to get her and her haunting voice out of his mind he begins following her through the back streets of Sin City. Over time we learn she is strung out on opium and given up on ever escaping the brutal nightclub owner (played by William Holder) who has gotten her addicted.
Mitsumount took a big risk on this script by Mike Bluegreen as the Hays Code explicitly forbade any representation of illicit drug use. Having just lost one of their lead actors to an overdose they likely felt it was worth the risk in order to illustrate the dangers of controlled substances. The movie does not in any way glamorize drug use. Despite La Treque’s haunting performances on stage she does a splendid job of portraying the ravages of drugs when she is offstage.
