Melondolly Baby 1943
An aging lounge singer battles laryngitis as she rehearses for what would be her big comeback.
Elva La Trque had a beautiful singing voice and very few chances to prove it. This film is no exception. La Treque plays Anita McRae, a lounge singer fighting laryngitis to make a comeback. Joe Retired is charming as her musical director but even their chemistry cannot save this ill conceived picture. You can read it in the performance that Mitsumont had effectively rung La Treque out. Putting her in what would be her final role with the studio as a mute singer trying desperately to climb back on top is so emblematic and heartbreaking to watch.
After this film was released and bombed at the box office La Treque was released from her contract and did not work again until the final insult to her career “Pete, Carol, Fred and Granny”.
